Featuring the oldest manicured gardens in the US, Middleton Place is steeped in history. A labyrinth of unique gardens, striking Ashley River views, centuries-old live oaks, historic ruins, rolling terraces, aged stable yards… it's a poetic escape from the bustle of downtown Charleston without veering too far from the city center.
Open to the public for garden tours and historic craft workshops during the day, this is a venue beloved by visitors from all over the world. If not for the hypnotizing views, then certainly for the wooly sheep that graze amongst the scenes.
Middleton Place is located along Highway 61, about 25 minutes from Charleston International Airport, allowing couples + their guests to experience one of the most scenic drives beneath a canopy of oaks that Charleston has to boast. Located approximately 30 minutes from downtown, we’d recommend providing transportation for guests who are staying in room blocks downtown. There is a modern Inn adjacent to the main site, which is walkable, but we’d recommend taking transportation for the wedding day itself.
1. A National Historic Landmark, it has 10 sites to choose from for ceremony and cocktail hour, with receptions reserved for their newly renovated Pavilion
2. There is plentiful complimentary guest parking, plus golf cart transportation from the parking area provided by a Welcoming Attendant
3. Couples receive a complimentary horse and carriage ride for one hour up until dusk
4. A curated selection of high end rentals (furniture and tabletop) are included with the venue rental
5. Their catering team is exclusive use with some of the most delicious and innovative culinary treats Lowcountry has to offer
The peak seasons are Spring and Autumn, with slower seasons in Summer and Winter. Single-day outdoor weddings are what we see most often here and it is a wonderful choice for couples seeking ample site options for their ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. We also offer microweddings here with our 'Gather Together' service. The estate encourages exploration, and we see many couples offering guests the chance to meander through the alleés before or after the ceremony since there is an undeniable secret garden feel to these historic corners.
Being located outside of the city center is a bonus for couples looking to celebrate later into the evening since noise permits are not as much of a concern as they might be in a residential spot. The newly renovated pavilion was also built with vendors in mind, so from a purely logistical perspective, this space lends itself to more creative decor opportunities.
Plus, the grounds are teeming with the most adorable sheep of honor we ever did see! And yes, they’ll pose for pics!
